Looking for a suitable bottom feeder, any advice would be greatly appreciated. Something that is small and stays small, and can be kept singly or as a pair. Would shrimps do the same job?

Panda Corys are great little fish, always searching the bottom looking for scraps of food. They do need a fine gravel or sand substrate. What size tank do you have and what are the inhabitants ?

It is still a fairly new set up - sand bottom, plenty of plants and bogwood. Three platys, cardinal tetras and two honey gouramis.
I am just looking for something to turn the sand over a bit.

How big do panda corys grow? and anyone any experiences with Khuli loaches?

Panda corys really want to be kept in small groups, and prefer a mature setup. I would go for a bunch of amano shrimps (all right, they too prefer a bit of a group, but their bioload is fairly low).

It all depends on how big your tank is really.

Ideally cory's should be kept in a group of 5-6 or more. Most cory's that you get in LFS will probably grow to about 2".

Khuli's do better in groups too - they are very nervous in 1's and 2's - you wont see them either then.

The best creature to turn your sand over are MTS - malaysian trumpet snails - but you may not want them. If there's any excess food in the tank, their population will explode.

TBH you can check most of this info out in the fish index.
