I picked up the final addition for my 20 gallon today, 2 bolivian rams. I do have a few questions about them though. ;)

First off, I thought i got a male/female pair, but i see one of the fish being quite agressive towards the other, i think it just may be because of the size difference. Can someone tell me how i would be able to sex the rams so I can make sure that i have a male/female pair?

Secondly, when i fed them, they didn't go to the top of the water to get the pellets i put in there for them, instead they ate all the flakes that fell to the bottom. Should i get them sinking pellets or will they go to the top of the tank to get food once they are settled in?

My final question is a stupid one :p If the pair i have are male/female, do they have the same likelyhood of breeding a german blue rams do?

Tanks for all your help,

Trevo

I don't know about sexing or breeding them, but Bolivian rams are bottom feeders, and will have extreme difficulty getting food from the water's surface :)

feamles are more plain then males and you will notice males have a big yellow belly
Bolivians are much easier to breed the blue/gold rams as they arnt sensitive to water conditions

The male may be aggressive towards the female as he may be courting her possibly but I am not 100% sure. When I first added a female german blue ram to my 120 gallon with my male german blue ram he chased her all around the tank. But they calmed down after about a day or two.

Hey i have a pair of my own and here is what i have noticed. My male is aggressive towards the female but he never hurts her. usually the male is much brighter and the top fin is usually black for the male. and they only eat my algae wafers not the flakes i throw in. hope that helps

Hi, i just got a pair of bolivian rams for my 28gallon yesterday and i think i got a male/female pair.

They didnt take flakes from the surface so i put in some tetra Tabimim(for catfish) just so they had something to eat.

Looks like ive got to buy sinking pellets as well.

the way i get my B-rams to eat flakes is to stir the flakes with your finger and they will sink and the ram will go straight for it

I pour mine right into the filter outake, then the current brings them to the bottom .
Thats how i feed my rams, and i feed them sinking cichlid pellets

My rams love shrimp pellets. Also, when the flakes sink from the surface they will attack them depending on their hunger.

I don't have Altaespinosas(Bolivians) but blues and mine at time of feeding never stay at the bottom. The moment they see me over their tank, they all shoot up and feed at the surface.
I must also say that if they don't, the angels won't leave any food for them to feed on.

Smart fish :shifty:
