Bolivian Rams - Help Sexing Please

"Fish 2 seems a little shy and doesn't want to show me its tackle."

lol. Yeah I'm 75% sure #1 is female -_- I have spent all day making sure mine have eaten properly as they had sunken stomachs :( Problem is my 5 Colombian Tetras eat like possessed Piranhas! :S Your male has lovely black markings!

These are pics I'm going off:

Do those pics apply to sexing any kind of ram? I'm thinking of getting a pair, but not sure of the kind until I discover what the lfs has in stock...

I'm not sure if you can go off this with any other Cichlid Ram.. what type are you considering getting? It can be difficult to sex them until they become mature adults. Other ways other telling are the first couple of spines of their Dorsal fin are longer and more like spikes with males. Also, look at the prominent black blotch situated at the mid-lateral on side of body.. if you can see hints of blue in this blotch, it will be female, males don't have the blue. :)

I don't know, that's the problem - I've only considered rams since briefly looking in a tank with some gorgeous peachy coloured ones in at the lfs on Monday.

I think I'll wait until I'm back in there next week, take some piccies and see if I can find out what kind they are and therefore how I can be sure on a m/f pair! :good:

the gold ones are the same as blue rams, same species in fact. they require higher temperatures (28-32oC) the females have pinker bellies, and the males dont

Right thanks - I'll have a closer look when I go back! Think I still might take some pics just to be sure! :)
