Which would you recommend as best for the community aquarium with lets say a novice fish keeper ??

I personally prefer the better colourings of the GBR but I have heard there harder to keep than the Bolivians due to the stricter water requirements & temperature compared to other community fish... My other fish will be Panda cories (About 7) & a type of schooling fish probably Cardianls or Galaxy Rasboras.

go for bolivians over gbr's. as you said they are easier to keep as they arent as fussy as gbr's. the rasboras would be a nice expensive snack for th erams too so i would go with cardinals :good:

Definitely go for the Bolivian Ram, Panda Cory's like it cool where as German Blue Rams like it warmer, also make sure you have a sandy/fine substrate.

I'll also be getting a pair of bolivians for my fairly fine gravel 29 gallon tank. I'd prefer them to the gouramis I was going to get. :good: I also prefer GBR but bolivians are easier so I'd go with bolivians.

Thanks for your input so far guys, everyone leaning towards Bolivians up to now... "Standby" I have already purchased sand to use as my substrate so I'm 1 up on that front :good:

Defo the right choice - and once settled the colouring on Bolivians can be amazing and can rival the GBRs.
What size tank have you got / are you going for? I would love a group of these - they are meant to exhibit some great social behaviour when kept in numbers.

i have A pair of GBRs in my tank which spawn every month without fail,i do not beleive they are as delicate as they used to be,my tank sits about 24 and i have had no trouble with them whatsoever.

Only got room for a 130 tall tank so I'm limited to around 2 rams but there very nice fish

i would recommend bolivian rams

also no rams will eat rasbora

I was gonna say, my two GBRS (think I've had a couple of months now?) are in my tank with Ember Tetras and Green Neons (and Pygmy Corys come to think of it) and haven't shown any interest in them at all. The only ones I've seen any altercations with have been my Sparkling Gourami but to be honest I blame them for that coz they are and always have been buggers, not the GBRs
