Bolivian Ram Or German Blue Ram

Are German Blue Rams or Bolivian Rams difficult fish to care for? Out of the two, which one is easier to care for? If I do get some rams, waht would some good takmates be for them? I have a cycled 29 gallon and im trying to find some new fish for it.

Normally, Bolivian Rams are a little more hardy then Blue Rams, but personally I believe the Blue Rams are prettier. JMO.


If you keep up with water changes, you shouldn't have too many problems with either...


These fish can be kept with most community fish, or other semi-aggressive fish (be careful mixing the two.)

Thanks, I think the German blue rams are prettier also. Would a weekly 10-25% water change be enough to keep them healthy?

I'm not sure about Blue Rams but I do a 25% water change every week and my Bolivian is fine and dandy! I too find that Blues have a lot more colour, but if you have a dark substrate I think the Bolivians colour stands out a lot more than on a paler substrate. Either way they are both lovely fish!

Bolivians are alot easier than blue rams my bolivians have coloured up amazingly they are such friendly little fish too with awesome personalities, rams will live happily with Discus (not too sure how may litres your tank is though) rummy nose tetra, harlequins, bristlenose, angel fish and I am sure there are alot more suitable tank mates

Unless your tank is pH 7 or less and you have soft water with very low nitrates I wouldn't keep Blue Rams, I have just changed my whole set up to allow me to keep Rams and still one died despite perfect conditions for them. They are very sensitive fish. Bolivian Rams on the other hand are pretty hardy, mine do really well and are pretty colourful. I agree German Rams are prettier but Bolvian Rams aren't to bad to look at, just have a search around and find a really nice pair.

If your tank is recently cycled I think you will just be giving German Rams a death sentence if you buy them now. If you have the right water condition and still have your heart set on german rams i'd but them in a few months time.

Ive got 2 pairs of blue rams in a 45g tank. Ive only had them a few days, and they seem to be doing really well! Really pretty too!
They live with black neons, glowlight tetras, kuhlis and ottos. They all seem to be fine together!

If I have any problems with them dying etc Ill be setting up a special tank just for rams as they are such amazing fish!

Couldn't agree less. In fact, I have Ram in a tank with the Ph of 7.5, they are some lovely specimens, with an almost purple tinge to them. They breed regularly and are thriving in the tank...


Yes, a water change of 25% weekly should suffice.



Might I add, an un cycled tank is a pretty good death sentence for most fish. If you haven't cycled your tank, then read up on a fishless cycle, it is much easier!

Its been cycled for a while...I had some fish in it for about 5 months until i recently movend them to another tank. Maybe i shouldnt get them, since the water here where i live (colorado) is slightly harder than mormal. ><

How alkaline is it exactly? Like I said, clean water is the most important thing. My specimens are thriving in hard tap water...

Umm i think the pH is about 7.6-7.8 where i am, and the water is hard, but i dont know how hard.
