OK, I came home work last week and noticed one of my Bolivian rams had some damage to part of its caudal fin. I assumed it had gotten bullied as it was only minor damage to two of the 'spines' in the tail fin (I had not noticed any fish bullying him except for a little tit for tat from the other Bolivian ram). The fish was still eating, but it was hiding under some plants. Fine, I thought, it should be better in a few weeks. As an added precaution, I added 6 table spoons of aquarium salt and the required dosage of stress coat ( a stress reducer / dechlorinator). Each day however, his caudal fin got worse. It was basically dissolving. Today I looked at him and he was swimming in a 'head up' position, unable to maintain horizontal, and he was barely 'breathing'. Also the end of his tail seemed fluffy (cotton like appearance). Since I do not have a hospital tank, I made the decision to go ahead and euthanize him (as a note, the fluffiness did not manifest outside of the tank).

Now my question is, do I need to concerned about my other fish?

Here are my tank specs:
30 Gallon Fresh
PH 7.0
Nitrate 5PPM
Nitrite 0PPM
Ammonia 0PPM
80 Degrees Fahrenheit

I got the two rams last Friday. The other Ram is in perfect condition and is eating well. The other tank mates are 1 Upside Down Catfish (Synodontis nigriventris), 1 Spotted Climbing Perch (Ctenopoma acutirostre), 3 dwarf rainbows (Melanotaenia praecox), 2 ottos, 1 cherry shrimp and 1 blue mystery snail.

From what I've read, it appears he had Fin Rot followed by Fungus. Is it safe to assume that this disease was caused by injury or should I be worried about something that could be transmitted to the rest of the fish?

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Is it possible he had a case of fin and tail rot? That's what it seems like.

Once they do lose most of the fin they will struggle to swim and they don't make it as it exhaust them.
R.I.P.

Hmmm that is depressing. So are certain species just prone to fin / tail rot after injury? The injury looked really really minor at first. I was considering putting him in one of those fry tanks (at least to keep him relatively still and away from the other fish) that sits on the inside of your main tank, but I couldn't seem to find one around here. I'm thinking I should invest in one for possible future altercations.
