i have 3 males and that is what mine do, its never serious just a dominant thing they do,
so you possibly have 2 males

Hi Scotty.

First, if you can get closer photos that would be good, especially side views. How big/old are your rams? They are hard to sex so be patient a bit.

I too went to the store, bought two and was hoping for male and female. I based my decision on a round tummy, female, and flat tummy male. I read that is one of the distinguishing features, but really I think I was just lucky. I did not know that I had a pair until they spawned. The behavior you describe could occur with a pair so do not sex based on behavior. When I first bought mine they hung out together. A couple weeks later the male started chasing the female relentlessly. There were locking lips too. I was worried for a time because I worried the female wasn't eating and was being harassed too much. I started getting a hunch of being a pair when she was getting a bit bolder and he was getting his stunning colors... although her colors are quite nice too. Then she laid eggs and she became much more able to deal with him. When she has eggs he is like a nervous dad. When she or whomever eats the eggs, they go back to harassing but she now stands up to him and when it is feeding time, she does not let him boss her around. They have spawned a second time last week, but again the eggs disappeared.

So that is my story. :fun: Keep your fingers crossed.

they would normally fight for territory after just being added to a tank before considering spawning if they were male/female. clearer pics are needed, only thing i could make out is that u have a male cockatoo apisto and nice plants with the exception of the amazon sword

in the top pic, the plant next to the cockatoo apisto, on the left, is an amazon sword isnt it? the leaves are kind of, off colour. thats all i meant. ur other plants look quite nice though i wouldnt mind seeing a full tank shot.

as for the rams, the 3rd pic looks like a male. and the ram on the right in the 6th pic could be a female. but its quite difficult to tell from the pics provided

thats the colour the amazon sword is supposed to be,can't remember the variety
thanks for the info on the bolivians
they seem to be swimming around together now!!!!

cheers

Can somebody help me in how you are sexing those?

I can't see any differences, but would like to know how so I can get a pair that are different sexes.

in pic 3 look closely at the spot just infront of the anal fin where u would expect the breeding tube/ovipositor to be. it is not there. look at the tail of the fish, it has already developed tail fin extensions at that age. the anal fin also seems rather long. take note of the head shape and the general shape of the belly of the fish.

in pic 6 if u look closely again to just in front of the anal fin, it looks like the ovipositor is just barely visible, protruding out as u would expect in a female. the belly appears more rounded. while the tail is blurred, it doesnt appear that it has developed the extensions just yet. the head shape seems more smoothly rounded. and the crest on the dorsal fin isnt particularly what u would expect to see from a male.

though the photos arent very helpful in determining sex.

here is a mature male. they are exceptionally easier to sex when mature compared to a juvenile

he has the obvious dorsal crest. flat belly. bumped head shape. his genital papilla is tapering backwards to a point. and exceptional fins, length and extensions, tail, rear of the dorsal, anal and ventral.

here is a mature female.

at this age, she too has all the fin extensions of the male (the tail wasnt completely captured in the photo) except her ventral and anal fins arent quite as long. her head shape is smoothly rounded. her ovipositor is large, round and pointing downwards (and if she hadnt just spawned would be far more prominent). her belly is round-ish (again she had just spawned)

the traits that occur in both sexes usually always develop sooner in the males. head shape isnt always nicely defined in juveniles

Thanks, let's see if I can manage to spot these things on a fish up close now
