So ordered all my goodies to give the tank a much needed make over. I bought some new bogwood to make a custom piece. I have bogwood in the tank already but it let off loads of tannins when I first got the tank. So my new wood is currently bathing in boiling water in a bucket, is there anything else I can do before it goes in next week so that I dont get the tea coloured water??

depending on the wood it might take several weeks and several boils to get it to stop leeching the tanins. Ideally change the water and replacing with fresh boiled water daily until there is no trace of it in the bucket after 24hrs.

Alternatively you could run carbon in the filter to remove the tanins.

For some reason the bag of carbon i added into my filter didn't remove any of the tannis that my 50cm piece of bogwood released.
Since i have had the tank up and running (post fishless cycle) i have been doing 50% W/C's on a weekly basis, by looking at my diary that equates to 32 water changes, and only now the tannis has reduced to a barely noticable level.
So stick with it is my opinion.. my fish love the tannis the bogwood creates :good:

Terry.

Agreed... the tannins are considered a sort of fish tonic by many, and some fish really prefer it.

If you absolutely MUST have it removed from the water, you can add "Purigen" (by SeaChem) to your filter, just make sure the water goes through your biological media first before it goes through the "Purigen", otherwise you may starve out your bacteria.

Boiling the water will only weaken the fibres to let of even more tannis, your tank will be at 23c-30c. hot water from the tap is more then enough to let the tannis out :good:

Sitck your bogwood in the washing up machine, set on high (65c) for a few cycles, obviously ommiting any detergent.
