Bogwood

Thats redmoor wood i think, regularly available online and in lfs (good ones that is) :)

Using wood off trees is generally not the best idea, because of pollutants etc in the environment that wouldnt be good for the tank.

Yeah, it looks like Redmoor and Sumatra wood. They are readily available.

(/me would like to point out that all aquarium wood comes from trees out in the wild environment ;) )

I'm not that naive, i mean redmoor anjd all bogwood in general is called bogwood because its been in peat bogs for hundreds of thousands of years hasnt it? So any toxic rubbish will be gone. Also they're steam cleaned arent they? OR am i making stuff up now?

I cant remembet the website now but you can get redmoor pieces from it, how annoying! Maybe someone could refresh my memory.,,

Noo.. redmoor and Mopani don't go anywhere near bogs, they're just freshly dried like some branches from your garden would be. They don't get treated in any way, as far as I am aware. Only the wood we have always known as "bogwood" comes from bogs, the big chunks of brown stuff, you know?

I've been using dried hardwoods (<- this is the important bit, softwoods tend to rot) without any problems. Best one is oak, of course.

p.s. I prepare wood for aquariums by drying it out completely (i.e. leave it for a year or so), then stripping the bark off of it.

Oh right, woops, just going off what ive heard off other people.

I've got oak in my tank aswell.

My father lives in Donegal still, plenty of bog land down there. He had a digger hired and was opening a new part of the bog in order to cut more turf. He's sent me pictures of the wood he's dug up and I swear to God there's a load of it. There was one root and it was 25ft long. Since then I've been pestering my girlfriend about going down to "visit" along with the chain saw. Its a 3hour drive one way so I'll have to wait until we have our next weekend break and we can all head down. I can't wait, to see my family of course. :hey:

I looked through aqua essentials, but they're not big enough still :(
