I was just wondering if it went by any other name. None of the LFS's in my area know what I'm talking about when I mention bogwood and they just point out their Malaysian, Texas, and "regular" driftwoods. :(

it depends on which part of the world you come from. You don't get bogwood in Australia, only driftwood or branches from Asia that float for months. I'm guessing true bogwood would only come from areas with peat bogs.

What is the different anyways. What so special about bogwood? They serve the same purpose as Malaysian ,which most people
use.

Mopani, malaysian, regular driftwood they all work. Just stay clear of Grapevine sometimes.

Awesome, thanks for the responses. I don't need to worry about dropping my pH, so I can use this nice piece of Malaysian I found.

Make sure you rinse any new wood before adding it to the tank. Especially stuff from other countries. Quite often plant matter (wood, etc) is sprayed to kill off bugs before it is allowed out of quarantine. Rinsing and soaking the wood should remove any residual chemicals on the wood.

I doubt there is much difference now considering wood for aquariams in better treated then it would have been when the hobby was smaller, but before then actual "bog" wood would have been better as the acids created from a peatbog would have a natural "treatment" like effect on the wood, almost pickling it, and making in more rot ressistant. Though I would seriously doubt all but the most infomed and honest aquaraim wood supliers would even know where exactly there would came from and would otherwise just through around bogwood, driftwood, ect as snonmyns.
