I've got a 6.5 ft 160 gallon tank to fill, and many many rocks to buy. The tank I bought has an extremely large piece of bogwood inside) This obviously takes up a decent amount of space, and cost around £90 for the person that sold me the tank with accessories. It's in the form of the room of a tree, with three 'feet' propping it up. A lovely piece of bogwood.

Now this has released some tannins despite being in a tank for 8 months already. My question is, should I avoid this in my tank at all costs? I will be adding Tuffa Rock for Decor but using this wood would probably save me £50 in rock costs and provides good little areas for territories.

I realise this wood can lower PH etc (local water is 7.8 or so), but what are the effects of tannins/pther substances in wood on Mbuna Cichlids.

I'm expecting to be told it's a no no, but I wondered what the opinion is on wood in a Mbuna tank. I probably won't want to use it anyway as I'm all for recreating as natural habitat as possible, but wood it cause complications with the health of my fish when I complete my fishless cycle?

not really answering any of your questions :) but personally i wouldn't use wood in a lake fish tank i think it looks sort of out of place and i'm like you i like to create natural habitats for my fish to see them at their best.

duno if that helps...

hello there.I have a 150 gallon mbuna tank, and I personaly avoided bogwood. I have lots of the stuff myself, but I only put rocks in (its more natural). I dont feel the bogwood would be beneficial to the fish and it wont serve a purpose. get it sold and get more rock.

Other then its affect on the water, tannins and acids won't have any direct impact on your fish. As already mentioned by others bog wood just tends to stick out like a sore thumb in rockscaped mbuna setups, but if you've got a high KH (and therefor well buffered water) then you should be able to use the wood without issues if you like it. If you do not have a high KH then I'd skip it altogether whether you like it or not, since there's no sense in fighting the PH which is sitting at a nice level right now.

It's really a personal prefference thing, it will release tannins for a long long time so keep that in mind

BUT!!! why go the mbuna route? you could do a Tanganyikan direction since their more timid on average and house all kinds of different pleco and small catfish in there.

(my minds eye sees): a few white chaitika calvus -4 some gold head compressiceps 3-5

neolamp leleupi's, some shell dwellers scattered around the floor with their shells and their communities.

a couple burundi for size since its such a large tank

and living all around, in and on the bogwood plecos of all shapes and styles....

smacksmack WAKE UP its NOT my tank...lolol
