i have a couple of bits of wood soaking at the moment, ready for the new tank.. I have been soaking them for a week and a half now, and i am still getting a fair amount of discoloration in the water (changing hot water every day.)

I saw on one of the labels for the wood that a carbon filter should help remove some of the colouration once in the tank.. has anyone any experience of this.?

The tank will be cycling anyhow, im just being fussy and wanted it to look ok whilst cycling.

Cheers

If I was you I would put the wood in the tank whilst its cycling. I did this with mine and when it came to change the water once the cycle was complete it was deep brown. After the water change it's stayed clear!

The carbon should remove some of the tannins but if you choose this option its best if it was an air driven filter with carbon inside rather than a carbon sponge.

My driftwood took around a month before my water was clear again. I even boiled it many times before I placed it in the tank. Carbon will help, but I would just be patient.

hi,

just to let ya know, we r in the process if getting some bogwood for our tank, and yes putting a abag of carbon in one of uyr filters help keep the water lean and natural looking, well worth doing!! :p

Putting carbon in during a cycle is bad too. It will remove the ammonia and nitrites the bacteria need to colonize. The best thing to do is let it soak for a month or two and do not remove the water daily. I would at the least, remove it every three days but it's better to wait until the water is good and brown before you change it. It's IMO like changing the tires on your vehicle everytime you drive somewhere. You don't need to until it's time.
