Hello

I am new to this forum and tropical fish keeping, and am worried about my blushing angel fish

Tank size: 29 gallons

pH: I do not know the specifics of these. sorry =( I know it helps to know. But as soon as the symptoms started to show I got water checked and was told all levels are fine
ammonia:
nitrite:
nitrate:
kH:
gH
:

tank temp:78 degrees F

Fish Symptoms: My angel is the one I'm worried about. She is a blushing angel so she is a pale white with the red cheeks. On the 19th I looked at my tank and saw that she had weird red lines on her. There are red lines along the base of the fins, think if you were to draw the general shape of an angelfish and then outline just the body in red. Its a thin red line but was bright red and was definately not there before, and was at the base of the fins (not anywhere else on the body). Looking further she seemed to have a touch of red at the very top of her dorsal fin but its more at the base of the fins as stated before. Her tailfin also looked to be torn or starting to tear. At that point I had a gourami and he was chasing her but never biting. I figured he was stressing her out so I got rid of him. On the 19th I did a 5 gallon water change and added aquarium salt to the new water (for the first time), and then started dosing the water with melafix once daily. It's now the 24th? so they have had melafix for 6 days and I'm worried that its not getting worse...but not better either. It looked like the red was going down, but then seemed to turn bright red again after feeding, but then looked to flair up like that without any feeding. I can't really explain it..sometimes it looks like its going down and sometimes its bright red again, I can't find a trigger. She looks a little ragged now, more fins are torn. None have fallen off or anything, it just looks like most are tearing or splitting. It also looks like all the veins in her body are that bright red now. Her main torso doesn't look different but the base of ALL fins now have a red line and I'm seeing red lines in her cheeks and more coloring on the dorsal fin. However she is acting completely normal, behavior has never changed to that of a sick fish. She is the size of a half dollar coin and might have grown a little bit? but if she did its really not drastic. She is also eating normally and heartily, all fish are constantly searching for food (even though I'm probally overfeeding by normal standards) but they eat it all. I thought it was fin rot possibly and after calling around to fish stores decided to do the water change and start melafix. I have no clue whats wrong since this medicine that is supposed to work on fin/tail rot doesn't seem to be helping =((

Volume and Frequency of water changes: My tank is 29 gallons and 3 weeks old. The first water change was on the 19th and again it was a 5 gallon change. I was advised to do another 5 gallon water change on the 25th (as that will be a week of using the melafix)

Chemical Additives or Media in your tank: obviously water conditioner was added before the fish touched it. Safestart was added when the fish were added to the tank. I also added stability for 10 days afterward..I think the 18/19th was the last day I used stability. Then starting the 19th I've been using melafix (and added the aquarium salt with the water change). I've also started the stability again thinking maybe it would help. Water conditioner was added periodically through this week

Tank inhabitants: Red Severum, Betta, Blushing Angel, Dojo, 2 kuhli loaches
had an opaline gourami but got rid of him on the 21st
have had foxtail plants, log, and decoration/fake plants since day 1

Recent additions to your tank (living or decoration): tried to add 2 molly's on the 22nd? didnt work and immediately removed them and went and exchanged them for 5 neon tetras the same day. They were fine until I researched them and read about neon tetra disease, freaked out, and removed them and took them back to the store. So no new fish anymore, and am not planning on adding anything else

Exposure to chemicals: other than the normal fish stuff mentioned above,no

Side note: Tank water has a green tinge to it and has had it since...the first week? not sure exactly when. I think it was after all the fish, live plants, log, and other decor was added. Not sure if I have algae, if the log is tinging the water, or if its the plants. I did soak the log for a day though and again water tested perfect on the 19th.

Sorry for the huge amount of info, just trying to figure out whats wrong. The angel is one of my favorites and I really want to make sure everything is ok.

thanks

do you have a test kit
for testing for ammonia nitrite and nitrate and pH

Like Biffster says get a test kit (API one is good). You need to do tests on your water and should never trust the fish shop. When you get it your Ammonia and Nitrite should always read 0 and your Nitrates should be kept at a sensible level (40 or below depending on your tap water). Your filter isn't mature yet with bacteria that can deal with the fish waste so what you're in is known as a "fish-in" cycle. Depending on the results of your water tests you could be looking at daily large water changes until your filter is mature. I really think this could be a water quality problem. If not then it could be fin rot ( think!) but explore the water first. Even if it is fin rot you still need to cycle your filter. If you go into the beginners section there's a thread pinned at the top that has link in it about cycling.

When you say those fish didn't work out, what do you mean? Bullying?

P.s Your Angel would prob have eventually eaten the Neons anyway so good job you took them back!

Thanks I will look up pricings for tester kits and check out the other feeds. My main worry is that I've already invested a fair amount of money into the tank and I heard those testing kits run pretty high. Is there a brand that is cheap but still works effectively? And yes I've had a pretty big debate about the "age" of the tank and the effects of putting the fish in before a fish cycle. In the end I've had multiple sources on both sides saying you should cycle or that safestart will be just fine. Either way, the fish are in now and theres no going back :p my confusion is that I have not only put the safestart in the tank, but have been adding stability (the good bacteria?) to both the tank itself and the filter for about 2 weeks now. So shouldn't it have the beneficial bacteria it needs by now? Also does the water condition I described sound like algae? Theres no scum on the side of the tank, at least not enough to be noticable at all..and that water has had a green tinge since the begining..I have no problem doing daily water changes but would that stress the fish out? The shortest time I've heard has been a water change every week, never heard of a daily schedule. How many gallons would you recommend to remove if I did it daily?

Other than that do the symptoms sound like anything but fin rot or water quality issues? After asking around all anyone could tell me was try melafix or that she sounds stressed and go a 5 gallon water change. Seeing as its not working as far as I can tell (dont know how long it takes to cure fin rot) I wanted to make sure it wasnt something else I didn't recognize. I know its important to catch stuff early

and oh yes! there were bullying issues lol. I put in the mollys thinking they would just be pretty and active. I got a jet black one that my betta IMMEDIATELY did not like. Swam on the side of it for a whole 2 mins before he decided to peck. And there was a silver whatever molly that immediately started chasing my angel everywhere. Seems like whatever I pick either picks on the angel or the betta has a problem with it, so I believe nothing can really be added at this point. They've obviously developed a trinity that they don't want anyone to mess with lol

Nevermind about test kit pricings, just looked it up and amazon has some really good pricings :D
When I talked to local fish stores while keeping goldfish everyone acted like they were really pricey =o
