Hi.. I have a male and a female blue ram in my aquarium. The male seems to be staying on one area sitting on the bottom. He has not moved all day. My female has turned very red/ pink on her belly and has what looks like a 'tube' sticking out from underneath her?! WHat are my rams doing? is thins breeding behaviour?

sounds like the ram that is getting very red and colourful on the belly is a fire-mouth ram which has settled into its surroundings and its true colours are showing, it may be that the tube you refer to maybe its "poop" that looks like a tube, the ram laying down and not moving tho sounds as if he isn't too happy and may not be doing as well, i have had 2 ram that displayed this action of just laying on the bottom then retreated to a hidden area to be found the next day no longer alive. I hope however this isn't the case for you !!!!!!! and is just a lazy ram, ive never seen ram or had experiance of their breeding habits but this may be a habit to them.

Scott.

I recon they could be getting ready to breed. I've had two unsuccessful breedings in a month with my Bolivian Rams

What they did was the female would firstly clean the area (ie driftwood) of sand. i thought something was up when i noticed the breeding tube hanging down. Next time i checked the tank i had probably 100-150 eggs on the edge of the driftwood and the male was fertilizing the eggs. Amaizing to watch! Then the female would take up a guarding position close to the eggs chasing away any fish that would get near. Even the male ram!

Unfortunately i've not been successfull yet as within two days all the eggs are gone :(
