I have a blue ram currently in a quarantine tank for a couple of days until I decide what to do...its a beautiful fish but just sometimes very aggresive towards my other fish...is there any thing I can do? My tank is 14 gallons and currently holds three ottos, two platies, one small bristlenose plec, 3 amano shrimp and 5 guppy fry. I don't want to rehome him if possible! Any advice would be appreciated!

Are those fish all that is in the quarantine tank or your main tank you are putting him into? I would just move stuff around in the tank to make him feel less at home so he does not get as defensive, and if I were you I would just keep him and put him in the main tank to see what happens. When I brought home my first 2 rams the male kept nipping the female in the bag on the way home, but once he got into the tank he was fine. Just give it a shot I would say, if he is still too mean then take him back, but Rams are prettyt peaceful so I think it will be ok

Thanks for the advice, the fish mentioned are the ones in the main tank for the moment, he has the quarantine tank to himself! I've had a huge reshuffle anyway so could reintroduce him and see how it goes?

Introduced him two days ago and he seems fine! His colours have come out beautifully so all is good!

IMO.. and I'm not trying to be mean.. just honest that is not exactly the best set up for a ram. It could work.. I'm not saying it wont.. but do not forget that a ram is a cichlid and therefore, it is aggressive. I would keep a real close eye on those shrimp and guppy fry and watch that he doesn't nip the platties.

Good luck. I hope the set up works out for you :)

Thanks Amber, I guess your right, I just really like him! I know thats a wrong reason to keep a fish but thats why I've tried! I think I have to accept he's not suitable, there's not really enough space in there in terms of length etc anyway! Hmmm

hello...
ive had blue rams and ive still got 2. theyre lovely fish, really colourful and great 2 watch, the only thing wrong with em is theyre agressiveness, they r aggressive towards other fish and each other, we got a siamese fighting fish ( betta splenden ) we thought the fighting fish might of killed sum of the fish but luckily it never bothered any of them. unfortunatley it died as one of the blue rams killed it with lightening speed attacks, by the time we realised it was dead the clown loaches were eating it, quite a mad experience really so we arnt gettin another fighting fish. the blue rams arnt as aggresive now so its all good, we got 2 different types aparantly  A BLUE RAM (longer skinny body) A BALLOON RAM (short round body). ya never know they might be male n female n produce loadsa fry , now that wud be good!!!!
does any1 know anyother bright colourful fish like blue rams which can be kept in a community tank? thanks
LEO
