I am going to say ick.
but heres the thing.
I have him off in his own little tank with a heater and the works. but the white spec on his left fin (if looking at him in the eyes), is not dropping off. It has been about 4 days and i have been watching and waiting. As the temp can only go to 78*f, could that part of the reason for an extended cycle before it drops off and starts over. I have been using ridich (5ml for 5.5 gal) nightly with a 50% change on day 3.
So i am stuck. thoughts pls.
all the other parameters are normal. Nothing to worry from what i can tell.

Are you sure its Ich, it would usually be more than one single spot, it would look like he had been covered in salt specks.

With Ich you want the temp above 80 to speed the cycle up, it will go with a lower temp but it takes longer for the parasite to drop off the fish, its only in the stage where the parasite has dropped off and is free swimming that its vulnerable to medication. It only then has a few hours in which to find a new host fish to attach itself to.

One single spot doesnt sound like Ich to me, can you give us any more details please?

The problem you have IF it is ich is that you removed the fish to a treatment tank. There will if it is ich be parasites in the main tank and this will also need treating.

A photo may help us to see if it is ich.

Well, i can say that i have also treated the main tank and was able to raise the temp to just over 80*F.
No signs of anything in that area. I have a crappy camera phone, i will try to get a pic of it. It just looks a like white spot. Nothing else anywhere that i can see.
It has been on him since before last sunday, no change.
a pic is needed here for sure!!

what else could it be?
lets play the theory game!!
you go first!! :hyper:

Yea, i just took five pics and its a no go!!
they all sucked and he moves his fin to darn fast. I could maybe try some video. I did notice that he is almost holding it out as if it hurts.
I looked him over and he has no other white spots. I can swap heaters with my 10, it is adjustable. So what should i do?
water temp is holding steady at 78*F.

he is acting normal but his color is not as bright. It might be 'cause i scared him though. my bad!!!
but he does greet me when i kneel down to see him.

Okay, had to go check my thermometer as I work in much lower numbers.

The normal temp for rams is 80-84 I think (28-30 is right not sure on my conversions to farenheight). If you want to raise temp to increase the speed of ich lifecycle it can go as high as 86 but any increase needs to be done gradually so that you don't shock the fish. You will also want to increase aeration. I keep my rams at 28 degrees, I would go higher but I have corries so stick to 28.

Rams need a much higher temp (as do angelfish) than other fish.

It has been explained in at least 3 other posts on the first page of new world cichlid forum.
Sorry am in a bit of pain, can't sit and type it all out again.
