For those who remember, I had gotten 2 blue rams but realized they were 2 females. They were pretty territorial and one definitely decided she was top dog. I thought they were going to be OK though and sort things out and then the alpha stopped letting the other one eat. Then, as I was trying to decide what to do (evening, fish store closed), they got into a squabble again.

I decided to just move the passive one to my community tank (lost a cory today :( ) and get a new buddy for alpha. If the lfs doesn't have any males, then alpha can just hang with the tetras til some males come in.

It stinks, I was really hoping they'd work it out.

sorry to hear about your problems. sometimes no matter what you do it is just not going to work. just proves that fish do have personality. some stink though!

From your signature, I take it you're a Marine wife?.... I'm an Army wife :p

Yeah, this one dominant ram sure is a stinker. TONS of personality, just wish she hadn't taken it out on what was supposed to be her buddy!

Parker don't worry about the alpha female, rams with lots of personality become the best parents.Trust me I should know. When I bought my female she was very young and only started to show the pink/purple spot. While at the LFS,I had to ask someone if that was a female and the guy said "yeah".I asked 'cause she was very colorful and seemed to be the dominant fish among 10 male/female mix of ramis;I always thought the larger males would be in charged.
Anywho,I took her home to my widower male and .....nope,it wasn't love at first sigh. They had many litle fights and one day they decided to start a family.
They've been parents a few times, and one day I had to move them back to the community tank; There they terrorized every fish even though they were a lot smaller. So you see, when your female finally pairs up and becomes a parent, she'll be the best mommy.

Thanks for the words of encouragement

I went back to the lfs this afternoon, but they had all females. Blue & Golds, including the spunkiest looking little bruiser with more black than I've seen on one. She was REALLY cool and fiesty looking. If I'd had the space, I would have snagged her for sure.

They get a new shipment next week, so we'll see what that brings.

You're welcome Parker, but seriously...that personality is what makes them excellent parents.
I am posting a pic of my pair. That's Juancho and Chiquis my female.Isn't she gorgeous?she's the one on the right.

You see, that's exactly why we love cichlids so much. Not only are they pretty but, have an attitude to go along with their beauty

I'm sorry they couldn't get along! I hope the new shipment brings you in a compatible male! Good luck with that!! :)

Oh by the way... I'm a navy wife and a marine daughter LOL

Ramesses - They are gorgeous, I loved seeing the pics you posted on my other thread too

Amber - Too cool :) We just moved from WA - he was stationed at Ft. Lewis!

All's going well with the new arrangement, but the alpha does seem a little lonely!

Yeah my hubby.. we'll call him STi... is on the USS Carl Vinson. Americas favorite carrier :D Out again at the moment but due home soon YAY!

YAY! Mine's "out of town" right now too, due home sometime around the end of next week :kana:

Nice Ram picture!!!

and great to hear parker!

Darn it. I just lost my alpha female that stayed in the small tank :X :X :X I went to check on her this morning and the snails were having a little snack. I'd put the other female back in the 10g, but I don't want to stress her out more. She seems to have an edema in one eye from a fight with the alpha and is looking extremely pale. I think the kicker was that we were without power the other night for 17hrs

Maybe now I can go get that bruiser female I saw in the store the other day. Not the way I wanted to make room for her though! :(

Another big bummer. I went and looked in the 46g at the one I'd moved in there and her tail is nipped away to almost nothing. I did move her back to the 10g to get her away from the barbs but she's looking pretty poorly. I'm contemplating euthenasia :( :-(

Well, I did it. I euthanised her :-( She was still trying to swim, but kept going belly up. It was pretty sad.

Is it bad that I feel more upset b/c they were relatively expensive? :/
