does any one know about blue rams?

i just got one tonight and need to know a little info about them.

they are good looking fish, and i got them because they are not as aggressive as other chiclids. and they dont get as big.

can they go with other chiclids? or can they be with another of the same species?

i kno that they like their pH at around 8

thanks for all that can help. ive just started chiclids. i have another 20 gallon community tank.

also what is the best fish/chiclid information site. i searched for one but didnt have much luck. it brought me to this forum, which seems like theres alot of peopel that know what their talking about.

!Thanks!

They are a bit on the sensitive-side. Some say try blue ram first before getting into discus as they have similar water requirements.

You are right, they are one of the tamest cichlids known. During breeding time, the male can become a little aggressive but compare to other cichlids, its nothing. In my "peaceful" tank, it was the king, but he never really attacked or hurt any other fishes while he was alive...

pH of 8 isn't ideal for them - they like soft water. They will probably survive at 8, but probably hard to breed at that level. Neutral or lower would work better for them. My tap water is at 7.2 and they thrived. Their lifespan is rather short, at around 2 - 3 years.

:hi: to the fish forums, introduce yourself in newbies section

blue rams should be kept in pairs so make sure you get another one soon because they really dont like to be lonely.

secondly Blue rams are New World Cichlids,(the forum below this one) im sure a mod will move this thread soon.

Blue rams can kept with any other kinds of peaceful fish, they could even be kept in your other comunity

just not aggressive fish. but they also like to be around other rams.

the minimum size tank for a pair in 10 gal but they should be kept in a 20 gal

a good cichlid site is www.cichlid-forum.com which has loads of information on cichlids ....duh!

enjoy your time here

I thought they like acidic water? Most info in the net say 5-6.8 pH...

Yes, you're correct. In order for rams to thrive, they do best in soft, acidic water. However, so many rams now are starting to be bred to live in more neutral water that it's not as critical. It is optimal for them though.

They can be kept singly but are happier in pairs. Some of what I've read online has also said that a harem like group with 3-4 females per male is OK too.

blue rams are very very hard to keep i had 2 and they died a couple of years ago and i`ve spoken to some stores that refuse to keep them as they keep dying and those are renound stores in scotland.

Soft acidic water is correct but they are very sensitive to any changes so don`t do any dramatic water changes.
