I'm aiming to get some blue platys (once my tank is complete and cycled). Are they an easy fish to get hold of or are they harder to obtain than platys in the regular colours?
I say 'regular' colours because it looks to me as if blue platys are a bit rarer but I could easily be mistaken.

I have a tank full of blue platy... they're the "balloon" type though.. I don't really see how they look different from a regular platy though cept they're a bit fatter *shrugs*
Anywho, our Petsmart sells them all the time. Some are a lighter shade of blue, while others are a darker blue.
Here's a pic of some of ours.... the flash makes them appear a bit more aqua color

you shouldn't have a problem finding them, sometimes called blue coral platys. i cross bred mickey mouse platys with blue corals and now i have my own blue coral mickey mouse platys :)

Just beware that some stores try to sell blue platys for more as some people think they are quite rare - this isn't true and they shouldn't do it so don't pay more than the average red wagtail.

Blue platies are not that rare but really common....except if they were lyretail which I have blue wag lyretail platies. Normal blue ones are far common but beware about which strains that's colored blue like blue peppered, blue wags, blue mickey mouse, etc...so just make sure that you get BLUE platy, instead of other blue strains.

Agree these are not rare at all, always in my lfs for £1 each

£1 each, jeeze how do they manage to pay their overheads

numbers, when you think a farm will have at least 500 females that each give birth to 30 fry every month and can be fed on pretty much anything thats small enough.

Deffinately not a money making home breeding project

A quid is the cheaper end of the scale, in leeds they usually go for 1.50.

Yeah most commerical platies are cheap, but the breeding are fun at home.

Rare platies can bring you some money than commerical ones. Like lyretail platies, albino platies (which now rare at present day), koi platies and wild type platies (now rare in aquarium hobby). Most rare platies are home bred and not commerical bred.

Your guess is as good as mine m8, all the plays in my lfs are £1, unless they have a high fin or they are pin tails, then they tend to be £1.50
