Blue Paradise Gourami

I have 2 blue paradise gouramis a male and female I seperated them for a week and when I re - introduced them they changed from a pale blue to a dark grey with orange stripes they are in the mating process he has started the bubble nest and she is showing interest. Does anyone know why they change colors?
