Hi, I have two blue acara that are acting a bit lethargic. I noticed yesterday that they both have a cloudy white patch over their mouths. They seem to be eating but just don't look right. The male seems to be a bit worse than the female because he is hiding in the back of the fishtank and is swimming sideways. All the other fish are acting normal. What could be wrong with them? Please help!!!!

I've never kept acara, but it sure sounds like cotton mouth to me which I've had in my tank a couple of times. Swimming sideways is usually a bad sign in my experience, so I'd definitely get to the pet store ASAP. It looks like fungus, but is actually a bacterial infection. I've used maracyn plus and triple sulfa to treat my mollies for cotton mouth with a 100% success rate for both, so I'd go with one of those. Also, do you do frequent water changes and/or do you test your water? Those can be an indication of causes.

Size of tank in gallons or litres.
How many fish and which type.,
Water stats in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph.

Signs of mouth fungus which is flexibactor columnaris is grey white patches on mouth, bleaching of the mouth, cotton wool on mouth area, strands of cotton on mouth, mouth rotting away, swelling of the mouth, spots on the mouth area.

Once mouths starts to rot away you are best destroying the fish.
