I've never really kept cichlids before so this is all new to me. I've been researching different types of cichlids to get for my 55 gallon and I've come to the conclusion I don't want pairs because I don't want to deal with the agression and fry. So I've been thinking of doing some type of mix.

I've come up with a short list of some possible fish that would get along:

Blue Acara
Turquoise or Gold Sverum
Sajica
Rainbow cichlid
Red aureum

I'm looking for somemore ideas though of good mixes so if any of you have some ideas I'd really appriciate it. I was thinking I could keep maybe 3-4 different types at around 5-6 inches in my 55? What sexes should I be looking at getting of each species? Should I add them all at the same time and should they be of similar size?

i would say yes, and you would be best getting all males less chanec of cross breeding and males usually show better colour...

although sexing them small is another question...

getting them at the same time would help and smaller then 3" would lessen the aggrestion...
but if buying them at differant times, a tank reshuffle should also help...

moving the caves, rocks, etc breaks up the territories they may of claimed...

my only concern would be the sevrum may get to large for the set up...

apart from that the best form of keeping cichlids in my experience is trail and error...
(with in reason)

and just to cheer it up a bit

I have 2 Blue Acaras, 2 Sajica & 2 Jack Dempseys in my cichlid tank (along with 2 large Sterbai Corys to clean the bottom up)

They all get along fine, although at feeding time everyone gets a little fiesty, but you get that from all types of fish anyway.

I have a male & female Sajica (not sure about the Acaras & Jack Dempseys as they are too young to sex just yet). The male will have blue & purple patterns to his fins & the female is a little darker in colour & have yellow fins, this becomes obvious at a relativly young age too.

I was also thinking of adding one more pair of fish to my cichlid tank and thought about Firemouths but havent yet decided.

I wouldnt mind some suitable suggestions for additions of some other Central/South American cichlids to my tank too.
