My oldest favourite fish is sick!

He hasn't exactly been himself for a while (maybe 6-8 weeks) but he had no obvious symptom. He was just hiding a bit more and not being quite so active but to be honest I've had him about 18 months and he's always been big and never got any bigger so I did wonder if he was just getting old.

BUT tonight when I fed them, he looked like he had more "markings" (he's yellow and has always had flecks of orange on his body) I looked closer and no I think it's blood!!! There's patches where it seems to be in the "grooves" of his body. But I can't see any external wounds or anything so could this be internal bleeding? If so why and what if anything can I do for him?

I'll be honest I haven't had time to test the water today (or for a couple of weeks) but water stats have always been good and all other fish seem fine. I don't think there's any point trying to take a photo because my phone camera just wouldn't pick up the detail.

Does anyone have ANY ideas about this? I don't think I've ever even heard of any fish diseases with these symptoms.

I'm very sorry to hear this!
Based on your description, I'm tempted to say Hemhorragic Septicima. My fish got it recently as well. Red blotches appeared on his skin after a few days of slowed activity. There isn't too much you can do for it.

1. Re-test your parameters. I thought mine were perfect and the night my fish died my water parameters were terrible for no reason!

2. Quarantine this little guy. Give him fresh primed water but don't expose him to your Other fish. They may become ill as well.

3. Do a 70+% water change in your tank.

There ARE meds available on the market but typically this is a disease they don't come back from. I could most CERTAINLY be wrong in my guess do don't take it to heart! I would certainly follow my 3 steps though, as a safety.

Good luck! Wishing you and your fish the best! :)

Thank you so much for replying! I did fear the worst that there's prob not a lot I can do for him :(

I will take your advice and quarentine I think. Thanks.

You do need to do the big water change, too. It is always a good idea if ANY fish is showing any signs of illness. Dilute whatever pathogen is in the water. Our tests don't show bacterial or viral load in the water and you know it builds up as well.
