Hi all,

Is there a known disease that can cause blood to seep into the fins? This looks to be what has happened to 2 Odessa Barbs and 3 Orange Tetras in my tank.

NH3 - 0
Nitrite - 0
Nitrate - ~10
pH - ~7.5

Thanks.

Can you give us some more information please? or a photo would be better? Have you had any disease in the tank recently? Any aggression issues which would have caused nipping of the fins? Is the blood actually in the fins or on the fins?

No disease in the tank recently. The two Odessa Barbs were recently added, them and the tetras seem to have this only a couple days after. The blood clearly seems to be inside of the fins, and when the fins are spread seems to be following the lines and contours of the fins.

No agression or nipping of the fins; haven't noticed any and there doesn't seem to be any damage to the shape of the fins.

Could this be an internal bacterial infection?

Thanks.

edit: sorry no photo right now I am at work and was hoping to go pick something up on my way home. When I get home this evening I can take a picture though to clear it up.

Maybe septicemia: Distinct bright red streaks on the fins, caused by vascular inflammation due to systemic/bloodborne bacterial infection, also shows occassional discolouration on the fish flanks.

Can sometimes be cleared up by water changes but may need an antibiotic.

Can also be caused by ammonia poisoning, so check your ammonia levels

Thanks alot.

I will pick up the antibiotic on my way home. When I get home I will re-check ammonia levels, if it is still at 0 I will try the antibiotic, if not I will do some water changes.

Thanks again.

Whereabouts are you, in the UK, you need a vet to prescribe antibiotics.

In Canada, I believe we have over the counter drugs here to treat septicemia. They are tabs though that treat the whole tank... is this acceptable?

Thanks.

Should be fine, I can only say read the instructions carefully and follow exactly.

Thanks very much for the help this morning minxfishy.

I will let you know how things go.

After reading up a little bit on my lunch about septicemia, does it make sense that the sight of blood be constrained just to the fins?

In most cases that I have seen it is streaks of blood that can be seen on the body of the fish, and maybe a little bit on the fins. My case is solely on the fins. Just making sure I am going the right route before I try to medicate.

Thanks.

Sorry reply wasnt quicker, only just noticed you posted again.

In advance stages of septicemia, it can spread thru the body, but usually appears first on the fins, unless there is a previous injury and infection on the body.

I dont know for sure if it is septicemia, but going on your description it could be. Have a look on the net for fish with the condition and see if it looks like what your fish have. The best way to say for sure is with a good photo for members here to take a look at.

Ive only once had fish with septicemia and this was alongside a nasty strain of columnaris.
