I have 3 female bettas in my tank and they get on fine with each other, but recently one has got very fat as if shes about to explode, any ideas what could be causing this, all tank parameters are spot on,cheers in advance.

does she have vertical stripes?

maybe one of your girls is a male, and the bloated one is saving some eggs for him??

they are all females, all got the two white spots underneath

the whit spots are not always an indication of m/f cause young males can get them too, you could just have one cranky female to explain the fighting , but females do fight to establish peecking order. is the entire fish bloated, are the scales puffed out like a pinecone?, that would indicate sickness, if its just bloated around the belly you could be over feeding or another female could be eatting its food, or it could just be healthy and full of eggs, a picture would help out alot.

2 white spots?? none of my girls have more than 1, and to repeat what has been said many times before, the ovipositer is NOT a sign of a female. i had a male DTPK who was sold to me as female. i discovered she was actually a he, when he spawned with a CT female in the sorority tank. and he had a very clear white sticking out "ovipositer"

here is a photo of him guarding his eggs, and between his ventrals, you can see his little white dot

Edit: azulfire beat me to it!

its just mega fat round the stomach area compared to other two, scales arent raised, not overfeeding.its got me baffled, will try and post a pic but not promising.

yes the ovipositer issue really does need to be addressed, this does not mean that it is female at all, there are a lot of young bettas that are coming into the circuit with a mixture of both male and female characteristics due to intense breeding, this doesnt make them less breedable at all, ive got several long finned females at the moment and the qualities of them if proving to be far much better than the usual females that are found.

A good way to see the pine cone is to view from above, as this is the first way to see it before it is visible from front a frontal view.

will wait for the pics but it does just sound like this betta is eggy, some females get enormous with eggs

I have two females (well the book is still out on weather the one is female or a rtpk male) but these two kept hogging almost all the food away from the other girls, and are now not just bloated, but morbidly obese and look to be extreamly eggy...I have been starving them for a while to try and get them to slim down.

I had to divide up the female tank because it was impossible to get the other females fed without these two over eating.

I also have two males that have spawned before that have very very definded ovipositers.

is your female bloated all over with a pinecone look when you look straight down at her, or does she look very fat like this? this female is not sick, but just morbidly obsese and eggy looking.
