Hi all

I have a female platy, she was one of the very first fish i bought. over the last week or so she has gotten very bloated.
Also i haven't noticed her poop. She spends most of her time under the bogwood or in the corner under the filter.

She is still eating food and when she comes out she swims fine, she's alert and doesn't seem in any obvious pain.
I've also noticed a slight swelling of her anal opening,as you'll see in the attatched picture.

So far i've tried treating with Interpet #9 Anti internal bacteria medicine but it hasn't had any effect.

Stats are as follows:
Amonia = 0
Nitrite = 0
Nitrate = ~6
Temperature = 23 - 25

Thanks
-John

Shes just pregnant don't worry and quit using meds. They'll become pregnant even if they havn't mated since shes a live bearier.

yup shes pregnant! i think ready to drop any miniute,so if you want to save the fry, pop her into a breeding net, or if you dont have one just keep an eye on here,and provivde lots of hiding places for the fry ie,plants, floating possibly as they make their way to to the tank surface afrer birth,stop using meds and do a amall water change.
they do spent or try to spend " quiet time" away from the others, when just ready to give birth.

if i were you,after reading this i would go and check the tank for tiny fish( they can hide in the gravel too) is she still looking at big??

let us know how you get one, but stay calm :lol:

She dosn't sound right to me.
Are her scales sticking out.
A swollen anus can also be dropsy.
What do you feed your fish.
Also the fish should be going to the toilet, if she hasn't been going to the toilet for a while it can be organ failure.

I gotta say I'm with you on this Wilder. It's more the toilet thing that I'm concerned about.

my blue platy showed the same signs ( anal) when she recently gave birth, tho of course go with the others as they are much mure experienced

Mainly i've been feeding them their usual dried food, vitakraft premium vita granumix, some courgette that they pick on when the pleco isnt hogging it and they had some prawns the other day.

there aren't any signs of her scales pine coneing as of yet.

Can you do me a favour? I've tried to find out what is in the food you are feeding "vitakraft premium vita granumix" and can't get any info. Can you give me the ingredients please?

Emma

mmmm. Nothing major in there that would cause constipation apart from the antioxident Astaxanthin.

An idea might be just to feed flake food and courgette/cucumber to add roughage in the diet.

My "gut" feeling. sorry for the punn, is constipation while pregnant.

try feeding more vegetables and natural foods.

To me she looks pregnant, pretty far on as well, i dont think there is a major problem with her when it comes to illness..

What other fish are in with her? is there many males?

If she is being harrased she will tend to hide, especuially when pregnant heavy cos males constantly harras when females are ready to drop as they sense the birth and will follow the female and eat the fry as they drop..

Try also putting the temperature up to 26-28C and doing a 30% waterchange and see if that perks her up.

I agree 5teady, I wouldn't say there is an illness. As I said, I'm concerned more about the constipation of the fish.

So as I said, just probably a bit of constipation while pregnant.

Emma

I dont even think its constipated, it certianly does not look bloated or overfed as its stomach at the front isnt even dropped much, i think all her activity is just pregnant related and when he says he has not seen it poo, i aint seen none of my fish poo for ages lol... and i watch my fish a lot hehe

I would just do the waterchange and up the temp a bit anmd see how it goes, if no change then maybe just wait a while until her belly goes thin or looks like she has given birth..

I hope that is the case, and her toilet habits go back to normal after the birth.

All my platties have had normal bowel movements prior and after birth, so that was why I said constipation

Thanks a lot for the help guys and girls, i'll give the things you said a try and see what happens. and also i'll try to quit worrying so much :p

I do have other fish in the tank, mainly platys, a couple guppies. some kuhli loaches, a baby mollie and a pleco. It doesn't seem shes being harassed, shes kinda the biggest platty and does / did most of the harrasing :D
