I just got a male platy and he is bloated! At frist it looked like a pergnat female but it's a male(u cant tell that much form the pics). Also as u can see he keeps his fins closed tightly to his body(he's not doing it in the pics) and is nipping at the two females fins. He is also always pooing. Did the petstore over feed him and why is he picking on the females?

I dont own a water test kit so here's the stat.

symptoms: dark tummy area, constant pooing, fins kept close to the body, and i saw him rub on the gravel and a decor rock.

tankmates: 4 x-ray tetras, blue dwarf gourami, two female platies

New fish: Him, one female platy, and a chinesse algee eater.

Tank size: 20 us gallon

Tank tep: slow getting warmer every hour, currently: 77 f.

Without water stats its hard to say what the flicking could be due to, as bad water quality can make them flick.
Should never buy new fish without knowing your water stats.
What colour is the poo.
Dark coluration can be bacterial infection, with the bloating as well sounds like one.

Take a sample of your water to the lfs and tell them to write the readings down for you.
I would invest in a liquid master kit of your own.

Rubbing on surfaces is usually the start os white spot (more common for rubbing) but it might not be either. check him for little white spots.

If he appears to have white spots on him, up the temperature to 28 degrees, when the white spots fall off (he has none on him) then treat with some white spot treatment.

I may be wrong and this may not be the problem, but its worth checking out.

Also he maybe just stressed and need perking up a bit, maybe buy some stress zyme and some of that, your fish will appreciate that ;)

Hope all goes well.

oh, i hope ick doesn't start again! that was the worst week for me and my fish. I know that i should have a test kit but i've been doing fine with out one.

Doing fine without one?

This is not a good statement buddy, you should do this every week to make sure your fish aint at the risk of any harm, as you for doing ok ( you dont live in the water ;) ) lol

My male is fatter... none got fed properly for about 5 days (underfed, I wouldn't let my father near a bottle of fish food, he'd put half of it in the tank!) and he didn't lose any weight. I've just recently got a female that's in proportion to him, she is enormous and the largest platy I have ever seen. Probably they both have swordtail blood.

Check for any signs of fungus or ich. Flicking, rubbing, scratching or shimmying in the water can be signs that a fungus or parasite is making the fish uncomfortable and clamped fins is another sign.

Just one more thing m8, first of all, just try a 20% water change and see if that perks him up a bit.

Sometimes it can be something just as simple as this.

oohh, i thought that I should wait 4 the fish to get used to the tank first. Should I clean it now?

Ok, SO he does have white spot!   I have used an ick tretment be4 but it poised my catfish and betta (no longer in the tank). oh this so sucks! I think im going to just take out the platy and well....get ride of it. I really don't want to use the tretmant. Help me ! What should i do now?

~thanks

Well whether you get rid of the play or not, the tank is still contaminated and needs treating.

First up the temperature to 28 degress, wait a day or 2 until the white spot has fallen off the fish, then treat it with the treatment (see the leaflet in the treatment box for how to use). do not use any other treatment until 7 days after the white spot treatment has finished.

0k but i don't want my chinesse algee eater to die.

in the 1st pic can u see the white spot by the side fin kinda lower tummy.

Yeah. Cool how u got the pics like that :hyper: . I bet it's a missed placed scale.

Also I moved the platy to a clear vase, but, he's acting normal now. Fins r out and he looks fine. Could it have been that he's not used to the tank. But the other fish have been normal. I think I may put him back after I clean the tank and see how it goes.

If the platy has whitespot it needs treating and the whole tank.
If you was ill would you like not be be given a med.
There fish and living animals, they need to be treated with respect or fish are not for you.
