I lost trooper this week. He was a red and orange male fantail guppy I had for three years. I found him floating in the tank belly up. All his fins were intact and his color was fine. He did not appear bloated. I had even watched him...well poo...a few days earlier because my mollies were sick, but he was fine. I treated the tank with melafix and fed them with bacterial food. I lost two black mollies that had white stringy poo before I started treating and none after, but the guppies showed no symptoms.

Now my yellow male guppy does not look well. He looks bloated. His poo is not stringy or white...its reddish and well, normal I think. Is he sick?

He is well overfed, if you say the poo is white and stringy, then this could be a internal parasite problem i think..

You need to treat it with Internal bacteria treatment (interpet no 9 i use)

For more info, i would wait for a responce from someone with a bit more experience than me who can go in to depth for you. but thats what i think it is m8.

His Poo is reddish, and not stringy. I soo did not expect to be discussing fish poo when I woke up this morning.

This what i think..... personal opinion but you can see what others think...

Note im on about the male guppy here

I think you have just been feeding them a bit to much and thats what has caused his belly to swell up, hes just overfed i think..

The ones with white poo, this could be internal parasite problem, but like i said, someone with more experience will go in to dpeth with you about this..

If you have reated for that though it should be ok... did you do a waterchange after the treatment,,,

Whats your tank stats........, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph? tyhis would be helpful toothers who will be helping you.

Looks more than over-fed to me.

Any other symptoms? Is he hanging out in the dark / near the top of the tank?

If poop seems okay, could be any number of other things eg bacterial infection (in which case try the no.9) or internal parasites (you might want to try a specific dewormer for that).

It could just be constipation, in which case you could try feeding him a pea (cooked, cooled & mushed up) to clear the blockage first.

Three years seems like pretty good going for a guppy, the earlier death might be unrelated to this illness. However I would get this one out of your tank and into quarantine asap, just in case.

I've lost quite a few male guppies to this sort of thing (internal parasites etc) they are fairly sickly nowadays I think. If when you look at the fish from above the scales are 'pineconing' you should probably euthanize it now as it won't survive. They can hang on like that for days but having tried and failed to nurse a couple back to health I put the last one out of his misery straight away.

I rescued 6 neon tetra's and one of them went like this, one day it just sort of exploded and since then I have an internal parasite problem. The white stringy poo is a def sign, the bloating could also be parasites. Your other guppy soumds as though he might just have died from old age.

I'm not sure what the US best med is, in the UK it would be sterazin.

Red poo can be internal parasites if you don't feed bloodworms.
Camallonus worms are white but turn red when they have been feeding on the fish blood.

I feed them flake food and about every third day, dried blood worms.

I lost a black molly suddenly, so I've been feeding them antibacterial food only the last three days. (Just once a day in the morning) I'll have to shop for an anti-parasite med just in case. I've not really seen any but then I've never looked specifically so they hopefully I'll find some. Thanks for the advice folks.

Oh and he seems very normal. Swims all around the tank but if I go near it, he and most of the other fish go flying up to the top thinking I'm there to feed them. Other than being bloated, he does not appear to be sick. Fingers crossed. He'a such a pretty yellow fellow...well he was till he blew up like a balloon.

I moved the yellow guppy to a different tank. Found some internal parasite medicine (which looks like blue salt) but :-( when I got home with it, the yellow guppy was on the bottom of the tank. His gills were moving but nothing else. I treated the water but he was gone in less than an hour. I'm still treating the big tank tank, just in case. I appreciate your replies.

I have 5 guppy juvies now. 3 are female and 2 are male. Not ideal male female ratio I know and so far the colors are less than stellar. I'll wait until they are full size to decide if aI need more females and MAYBE get some pretty colored males. I'm thinking I REALLY do not want any new fish any time soon. Its is heartbreaking to watch them get sick. Wish me luck.

Major BUMMER! After losing both my male guppies, my juvie guppies are starting to look bloated. (The females actually look full grown. The males are still a little small. They were born mid december. ) I used "Jungle Internal Parasite Guard" that pretty much just looked like blue salt after the yellow male died. The directions read one teaspoon for every five gallons once every other day for three treatments with a 25 percent water change before each new treatment. I am not looking forward to my waterbill after 4 water changes in one week.

That was last week and the juvies now look swollen. Today I bought "Jungle Anti-Parasite Medicated Fish Food for internal parasites". According to the directions, feed exclusively three days a week for four weeks. l will start in the morning. Wish my guppies luck.
