Really hard to tell without more info or pictures. Best thing you can do is keep an 'eye' (pardon the pun) on the tank, look closely at your fish for any other signs of disease and do a water change. Don't add any checmicals or medication (except dechlorinator of course) until you have a firm diagsosis. If it is bacterial it will usually affect other areas before the eye so I'd be having a good look at the fish, are they nice, bright and shiny? Good weight? No skinniness, no sunken bellies, no lethargy, no spots, fluffsor discolouration?

at present there are no other symptom to any other fish the rainbow is still playing dancing and tusseling as usual feeding fine i realise that the convicts have got a fair nip as i have had my hands in there a few times in the past and the fact that the smokey eye was so sudden that i thought perhaps an injury

It's very possible it's an injury, it may even have banged it's eye on a decoration or something. Fish are quick healers so hopefully you'll see some improvement in the next couple of days. Good luck!

just to update and close this thread all is well added a bit of esha fungus finrot and Bacteria treatment as per dosage for 3 days all is well have also now done 50% water change to help raise the water quality a little
