I'm looking for an all in one black substrate. As the title really is there anything similar to Eco Complete that can be used with out capping with gravel. I reckon i would need two bags of Eco Complete for the tank i would be using, the tank is 24 inc wide by 14 deep. what depth of substrate would be best? I'm thinking 2 inches would be good, would be looking to plant a carpeting plant, some crypts and some slow growing background plants.

May be if i can find something at a reasonable price it will find its way under the Xmas tree. lol

Thanks Gordon.

Take a look in the for sale section. There was a chap in Scotland selling 3 bags of Eco-Complete for £40 delivered (damned cheap!).

Other than this, there isn't many other substrates out there that don't need capping (and don't cost a lot). ADA Aquasoil Amazonia is quite possibly the best substrate you can buy, but it's expensive (£27 per 9kg!)

Other than this, have you considered something like Tetraplant or JBL and capping it with something like Hagen Natural river sand? The Hagen stuff looks very nice :) (check Aqua Essentials).

Thanks for that Dev, but just wanted an all in one for ease of use really. Not used the planted substrate before and having seen black substrate in tanks, both on here and in the LFS, i would like to give black a go.

Cheers Gordon.

I've never tried the Onyx ranges of substrates, but the first one, seeing as it's 7kg and costs £27, I'd rather buy ADA Aquasoil as it's 9kg, possibly a better substrate and the same price :)

It will depend on the look you're going for though Binksy :) Capping off a substrate isn't that hard. As long as you don't have any burrowing fish, like larger catfish and such, you should be fine capping off one of the tetra/JBL style substrates with a darker sand/gravel. As long as you cap it with a good 3 or 4cm it'll be fine.

Thanks for that Aaron, but eco complete still looking good i feel.

Cheers Gordon
