This is a problem with a snail, but if you've had this issue with a fish I really want to hear about it!

I went to wipe off the body of a very sick snail tonight with a white papertowel, and it left a dark grey almost black line on the papertowel. I tried it in a few different places on the body of the snail, and it was the same black mark every time. There is nothing on the shell itself.

If ANYONE has dealt with something similar with a snail or a fish, I really need to know!

She developed black spots on her foot that then spread out and eventually "sunk" into her foot. It became shriveled and scalloped, but at the same time her body was swollen three times her normal size. At the advice of a breeder who had the same problems and cured it in some of her snails, I used Maracyn Plus for 16 days to try and combat it. Not only did it not work, her symptoms were worsening, which meant the antibiotics weren't having an affect. She became paralyzed shortly thereafter and has been so ever since.

I'm thinking the black stuff is either algae, mold, or a fungus, but I don't know how to figure out which it is. Any of them could be creating the toxins that is causing her paralysis. Once I figure out what the culprit is, then I'll try a treatment, though I know it'll be hard finding one safe for snails.

There is certainly evidence for this being the cause.....

Three things stop me from saying it is for certain:

1. Only the brigs are infected, not the cana or the marisas. Though it doesn't specify which snails are hosts.

2. The fish have not shown any signs of illness, though the article didn't mention how long it would take.

3. I really don't want to have to kill them..... I bought the tank specifically for those snails....

I would go to the snail part of the forum they might be able to help you more, good luck.

The only ideas I've gotten from snails people is that it's a bacterial infection - which it's not.

I'm just hoping someone has seen this in a fish. I just need a new starting point to figure out what it is.
