So my black moor always had a bronze/gold sheen to him, more noticable in the sunlight but when he was 2 years old, in the space of about two months he completely turned orange! And I mean Bright orange, not red or gold! So I guess he's just a telescopic eyed goldfish now and not a black moor :( i looked at my fish food and it says "enhance orange and red colours". so my question is, can you get pure bred black moors that will stay black? And did my food make him turn orange quicker? because I had one years ago that lived till it was old, grew massive and was always black.

You can get moors that stay black, but there aren't many that do, and there's no way of telling by looking at them which will change and which won't.

The food will have made no difference.

+1, it just happens. I've had some that stay black and others that mature into bronze colored fish. Nothing you can do about it really.

That is a result of recessive genes from his ancestors. Black moores arent always black, They sometimes have that bronze sheen

When choosing a blackmoor that you hope will stay black, don't buy one that is already bronze in colour, clearly indicative of colour change, got for the purist black you can find and hope for the best! Most goldfish change colour as none of the available colours are natural and depending on the quality of the fish and their breeding, most will begin to revert back to more natural colours OR more dominant strains as red is hardly natural colour for a carp! Grey/brown/bronze is closer.

Like with any animal, if it seems 'cheap' its probably 'poor qualty'. If you want a black moor to stay  black, don't buy mass produced little fancy goldfish from shops, make sure you have a decent sized tank and buy a well grow on blackmoor as if its still black and a good size, less likely to change!

Buy from a breeder that breeds for quality rather than quantity. I think Star Fisheries was always a very good name to know for goldfish :)

Personally I love fish that change colour as it is like having a completely new fish! I understand your disappointment though if you prefer the pure black moors.

It's funny though cuz his eyes have kinda stayed black so they look even more bulgy! I wonder if they will go orange eventually..

Awww he sounds adorable! can we see a pic?

Here's a pic of him I took a while ago, sorry its bad quality. His name is Gobby (you may laugh :p) because when i was little we had a black moor and i kept calling him "Gobby". So, i guess he's Gobby the 2nd ! Anyway, You may also notice his dorsal fin isn't up. This is because there was a fish that kept picking on him, I removed the fish and in about 2 weeks he was back to his normal self.
