That is one gorgeous fish. I had NO idea they could look that good. Question, as I have thought about having a few of them.

1. What is the minimum number advised to be kept together? And hence what minimum sized tank then?
2. Given they are messy, big poopers  do we have to buy heavy duty filters etc for them or not?
3. Given that putting other goldfish in with them really raises the tank size fast, any other compatible fish?

Mind you, if they all look as gorgeous as that first guy, just a few of them in a tank would be more than enough. Do they require special lighting? Heating? Rocks, just bare gravel or sand? Very curious.

Hi there, for fancies you need at least 8 gallons each, on here I've seen recommended 20 gallons for the first and 10 gallons for every fish thereafter. Two goldfish would be the minimum imo. I keep a Moor and he is gorgeous. You are best keeping fancy goldfish with fancy goldfish, no other breed is very good as a tankmate. You could have fantails, veiltails, ryukins etc with them though :D if you wanted a variety for colour etc. I have 2 Oranda's (one blue, one chocolate), one Black Moor and 3 fantails (2 orange and white and 1 calico). They look great together. As far as special requirements go, make sure the gravel is of a size which is either too big or too small (better too small imo) to get stuck in their mouths. Also, as fancies have delicate tail fins make sure there is nothing to damage them in the tank. They can be prone to swimbladder problems due to their compact bodies so feed regularly with pea and or daphnia to keep them cleared out inside. If you feed flake (which you should only do occassionally) or pellets make sure you soak them first so they don't swell inside the fish. Emm... what else....oh yes, they are really messy so mucho filtration is advised! They are gorgeous fish though, I love my fancies. My first ever fish were 2 black Moors when I was little so they have a special place with me  I realise now how badly they wee kept, too small tank, all falke food etc. I'm amazed they lived as long as they did, the last one was 7 when he died :/ We live and learn. I have told mum how wrong she was now  Any questions please ask! :D

Oh, they like to be a bit warmer than pondies, they prefer around 22C (ish) :)

Ok, so if you had two black moors in a 20 gallon, would that be ok? Or would I need a 30 gallon?

(I stupidly got a black moor and some other kind of goldfish, and put them both in a 5-gallon. :X The other fish died, so I just have the one black moor. I am trying to get things right for him. Can he be alone in a 20-gallon, or does he need a friend?)

what a lot of folks dont realise is it has nothing to do with tank size IMO what you need is surface area, ive seen numerous tanks that are deep but lack in width and length and these are about as much use to a fish as a bike

i used to keep moors but they are very prone to swim bladder problems and often they will lose there colour due to the fact they are colour fed ,kept in the right conditions they will grow to a decent size so 8 gallons per fish is no good go with the 20 gallon rule and you cant go wrong

I have also got Cloud mountain minnows and a hillstream loach in with my black moor with three other flutter fish. It is not a big tank but I keep a check on the stats and 25% water change is done twice a week. I agree black moor have a great character and my crowd hang out together and interact beautifully.

I have two black moors. Lovely personality, very playfull.

Is normal for them to "syncronise" their swimming? They have a habit of swimming together, one slightly leading the other very much like a pilot and his "wingman"

I have 2 black moors, 1 gold/black fancy, 1 shubunkin, 5 cloud minnows and an albino plec and they are great together. Even when the black moors are twice the size of the other goldfish!

They are very hardy too; one of my black moors got stuck in an ornament and lost most of her fins and her eye but has recovered really well even with only one eye- they are really quick healers!

On the gravel thing, I agree with definately smaller gravel! I've had quite a scare before when a piece of gravel got stuck in one of the black moors mouth! Try the small natural smooth gravel, they can spit it back out and it looks great!

I think it's normal; mine do it too.
