Hi -

I have a black mollie whto has had trouble swimming for the last few weeks. I have recieved all kinds fo advice as to what to do or not do. He seems to be eating but not swimming straight. He is now starting to rest alot. I moved him to a hospital tank and everthing is staying the same. Water is OK, no new fish and I just moved the tank from my classroom home. I have guppies, mollies and a pleco in a 29 gallon tank. Too many fish at the moment but most are small.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Size of tank in gallons or litres.
How many fish and which type.
Water stats in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph.

Does the fish look bloated.
What does it look like when the fish goes to the toilet.
What do you feed the fish.

Swim bladder can be caused by bad water quality, injury, birth defect, infection of the swim bladder, poor diet, unstable temp, internal parasites.

Have you tryed some peas.

He's been in a 29 gallon tank with 2 adult guppies, 1 adult female mollie, 1 pleco and lots and lots of fry. I have now moved him to a 3 gallon eclipse 3 type tank to keep him by himself. I just did a 33% water change on the small tank and the stats are still not good - Ammonia .25, nitrite .5, nitrate 20 and ph 7.2. He does not look at all bloated, I have been starting to give him peas which he struggles to get to - he ends up tail up or on his back alot - I feel so bad for him. I usually alternate between flakes and livebearer food for him. He's about 8 months old and has had no problems up until now. He's been having the swimming problem for a good couple of weeks. He is going to the toilet less but last time I saw it it looked pretty normal.

I think I'm going to get a 10 gallon glass tank to set up for his hospital tank today. I don't like that little on - plus with the filter it has I can't lower teh water level and have it still work. I have read he should be in less water.....

Any suggestions?

add some aquarium salt, mollys are brackish and would love it anyway, but it loosens up the gills n swimbladder. should help.

How many fry do you have in the other tank.

I would also try a bacterial med if he's on his back.
It's not sounding to good i'm afraid.

Lost any fish to looking really thin.

I have lots of fry in the tank - probably 40 (most are still very small) I need to get them to my lfs this week

Lost any fish to looking really thin. I have only lost a few young mollies right after getting them from a local fish person - that's it in a year of learning about and adding to my fish collection....

I would try maracyn plus.
Hows the fish doing.

He's still not any better. Ends up upside down and has to rest and then struggle to get right side up. He rests nost against the filter intake to stay at aa 45% angle or props himself against or under something to stay right side up and tail horizontal.... I'll try to find some maracyn and see how that goes. Water stats are gool Nitrate and Nitrite are 0 , Ph 6.8 and 0 chlorine.....

Not sounding good.
Good Luck.
