I have Black Hair Algae!!
I really cannot get rid of this stuff. I have read umpteen posts on this on here and on the PFK forum website and none of the terms etc mean anything to me. Plus everybody has there own way of getting rid of it. The Algae is on my bogwood, some of the glass, all the plants, my outlet/inlet pipe, my heater!! Everything.
I want to try and get rid of it now and understand why i am getting it.
I have tried to scrape the wood, etc but this doesn't help. I have bought shrimp to try and help clean the tank up but this didnt help. I have lowered the spray bar into the tank to lower the amount of surface ripple. I have cut the plants back and have removed infected leaves. I have added floating plants as i was told this may help.
My tank is a 260 vision. I have the an external Tetratec 1200 filter. In the tank are a shoal of rummynose and cardinals, 4 discus and 10 plecs that are growing on. Every second day i remove 25% of the water and replace it with normal cold water. At weekends i try to do a 50% waterchange or at least 1/3. I will check my stats later and post them. My pH is normally around 6.8-7. I have the standard bulbs that came with the tank which are the t5 variety.
My fish are fed mainly tetraprime and frozen cubes (i believe that this can effect the water stats - is that true), with algae tabs, earthworm tabs and veg for the plecs.
All the fish are healthy and well. For plants i have some of the onion bulbs, java moss, Willow leaf, Anubia Nana (I think. the plant attaches itself to rocks and bogwood) and water lettuce. The tank is not heavily planted. All the plants grow rapidly and dont seem to have any ill effects of this bar having black leaves.
Could somebody please advise me what to do. I am at the point where i am ready to just toss all the plants and start again, but i know this will do no good.
Thanks for any help you can provide.
