good day again one and all. i am back again with yet another problem in my tank that is just getting out of control. a black fur type thing is growing on everything but my fish (not totally sure on this :)). the glass, heater, live plants, fake plants, rock.. everthing! how can i get rid of this. i have tried pulling it off but its just no use and i really cant pull everyhting out to clean it at once because of the tank balance. is there any water treatment that might do the job? My tank is furry!!!

mnay thanks one and all.
bets regards.

I think the first step is to identify the wee beasty! Have a look at the algae page on James' Planted Tank website and work out which pet algae you have. It will give you an idea of what you need to resolve to stop it growing. Also a photo would be helpful.

I think it's fair to say that most algae outbreaks are caused by an inbalance between available light, nutrients and Co2. The general rule is that light drives plant growth, the faster they try to grow the more nutrients and Co2 they will need. If you don't supply the nutrients and Co2 the plants wont grow and the algae will take advantage and have a field day! Also look at ammonia levels, algae love the ammonia...

I am currently battling a similar algae and I have reduce the length of time the lights are on, and lowered the power head so that the pressurised Co2 gets distributed better around the tank.

prob. black brush algae. increase flow to those areas (or all areas) limit light and increase co2. a good substrate/mulm clean also to keep ammonia spikes down (even small, undetectable ones).
all the best
cheers
