Hi i have introduced myself before, but i guess im stuck to the newbies introducing forum as i cant post anywhere else but in this section........

I have black and white convicts and over the last few days i have noticed that they have been protective over the ship in the tank so i went to investergate and noticed why.....THEY HAVE EGGS.....I'm not sure what i should do now though???? there is other chilhids in the tank as well electric yellows and electric blues...do i separate them from the other fish or will they be ok??? that might be a silly question but.....
how long does it take for the eggs to hatch??? i also believe that the parents look after the young dont they???
please help me

Congrats on eggs :)
I have 2 convicts in a tank with loads of other fish, they will guard the eggs and protect the babies. If they decide to lay more eggs as soon as the first ones are born then they may eat the babies so I have always removed the babies into a breeding net so they are protected.
To get them out just use a bit of tube and siphon them out :)

My 3 pairs of convicts also have eggs so I will have hundreds soon as well :)

Thanks Inchworm it worked i was clicking the wrong link  maybe if i scrolled down abit i would of clicked the right one

amyw2008 Im thinking maybe they have had the eggs for awhile and i have just noticed them there in the stage as what they call wrigglers??? Im planning on getting another tank set up and removing the other chilhids from the tank and leaving the fry and parents in there....
If i left them all in the tank the parent convicts wont kill my other fish will they??? thats all im worried about

Hi Natty80 :)

I'll be moving your thread over to New World Cichlids then. You are more likely to get the information you are seeking there. :D

How big is the tank?

A breeding pair of convicts can be very territorial and are known to be quite the "hard nuts", they will need a fair amount of room to roam...

It sounds like you have the right approach though, leaving the parents to raise the young is the best choice, if you can make it that way...if you would have removed the fry you would only have to raise them in another tank anyway, so why not move the other cichlids, just make sure the tanks are big enough!

Also electric yellows and blues are African cichlids, whilst convicts of Central American cichlids, it is normal not to mix these two groups of cichlids. Their behaviour is totally different and they don't co-exist well normally. If you are moving them anyway that's a good thing regardless of why
