I currently have 2 male dwarf gouramis in my 290L (77 us Gal) they can have a stand off from time to time but most of the time they are fine with each other. I would like to add more but not sure on how many, would females be best or a mix of both?

Good luck finding females. I don't know about where you are, but here.....most lfs don't bother carrying female dwarf gourami since they aren't colorful. I guess they figure nobody would buy them. Also, adding females could go either way. It could distract them from sparring or make it worse.
I have been told that Male Dwarf Gourami can be kept in multiples as long as you have a larger group, like 5 or more. I don't know this to be fact....just something I've been told by someone with many many years of experience.

Either males or females would be fine IMO. If females, add at least 2 per male. If male, get at least 2 and make sure they are about the same size as the existing fish. In both cases, re-arange the tank just before you add the new ones. Aim for 8 individuals max. (fewer is fine but don't get too many)
