hi im in a bit of a dilemma and need advice please about 4 weeks ago my molly had bout 40-50 fry i have transfered them in to a 5 gallon tank which they are doing nicely i think though some have died....................now 2 days ago my molly gave birth again to roughly the same amount what do you think i should do please help do i

A=put the older fry in the bigger tank and do a survival of the fittest then transfer new fry into my 5 gallon

B=mix all my fry in the 5 gallon and do a survival of the fittest

C=mix all my fry in the main tank and do a survival of the fittest

i need advice as you can see and need help solving this situation thanks in advance joe

If the 4 week olds are too big to fit into the mothers mouth switching them with the newborns is the best option. If this iisn't pracitcal another tank would be the best option... are you planning on keeping all these fry? or do you have plans on where they are going? If not survival of the fittest may be the best route: plants and other hiding places will heighten survival rate

i am planning on getting another tank hopefully a bigger 1 but ill still be over stocked if the fry live thats why ill prob do a survival of the fittest i know its sounds cruel but as a newbie at this i never xpected so much fry lmao so i think ill do what you said for the mean time and put the older fry in the bigger tank and the new fry in the 5 gallon thanks for replying so quickly too

No problem :) If you do end up with lots of fry:
either A speak to a local independant LFS: mine will take any fry I can supply + give me some store credit for them, but mine are snakeskins, lyretails and deltas so that may be why.

or B sell them online: quite a few people list them on ebay/ aqua auction for a couple of pounds: not much profit but they get a good home.

Sounds horrible but survival of the fittest is often the only option with livebearers. Imagine the numbers exponentially! And they can have three lots of fry from one mating. I have a lfs who will take some but a lot won't for insurance reasons. I have a few fry at the moment and one got eaten this morning, it was about 1/2" long so not very tiny. :) I don't say that with any glee, it's just what happens.

ok for now all the fry are in my main tank and the new fry are in the net still but im going to transfer them to the 5 gallon tomorow for the time being and i will see if my lfs will buy any of my fry thanks for your advice :)
