Bit late asking now, but after getting my hands on some ammonia, put in 2-3 capfulls to a 190Lt tank (about 4/5ths full). Tested it, and blown off the end of the scale, about 8ppm.

Do I just leave it and it will just take longer to drop back down to 1ppm. Or should I take action, ie. top tank right up, partial water change, start again...........

Thanks

Just leave it no fish in there.

That happened to me last week, so I siphoned out 40% of the water and added dechlorinated water(dechlorinated after added) to dillute it; I got it to 6ish ppm

No need to start over. I would do a 50% water change with dechlorinated water. All you know for sure is that it is > 8 ppm?

After the change, test again.

Good luck with the cycling!

No reason to do anything, it'l take longer to cycle but you'll have a much larger amount of bacteria at the end, enoguh to put most of the fish in at once.
