I am tempted to buy an AquaClear to add some filtration to a tank which is on it's way. Is adding a Biowheel to one possible? I think Im goin to try it out. Has anyone else done this?

I don't see why, if your good with tools and building things it shouldn't be too bad. Good luck.

Do they really need a biowheel if you have the BioMax stuff in there? I thought the both served essentially the same purpose (biological filtration)?

You might be able to put a biowheel into one, but I don't think the water outlet is big enough on an AquaClear.

Personally I have both Penguins (w/ biowheels) and AquaClears (two 20's and a 30) and I'm ready to chuck the Penguin and buy an AquaClear to replace it. But its personal preference ;)

What size tank are you getting?

I run both aquaclears and bio-wheels on all my tanks and have thought about adding the "wheel" to my aquaclear....But after much thought it would really just be a waste of time...especially when you can run both filters and have the same effect with a higher gph . But if you do figure it out let me know cause id be interested to see how it looks/works.

It'd be easier just to go buy one. I have an Emperor and a Penguin and the Emperor's are made much better. Actually I've had no problem with either of them. You can also buy just a bio-wheel and run it off a powerhead. Yes, the bio-max does the same thing as the bio-wheels - biological filtration. However, it doesn't even come close to the amount of filtration the bio-wheels can handle. Remember, the bio-wheels are exposed to the air and will support many many times the amount of bacteria the bio-max will (since the bio-max is submerged).

AquaClear's are good filters though and if you're not overstocked and/or underfiltered it should be able to handle the load just fine.

Thanks for the clarification there. Makes sense.
