Can filter media from a cold water biorb be used to kickstart a fishless cycle.

A few of my friends have these.

If their tanks have been in use for a long enough peroid of time and are cycled themselves then yes! Are you talking about putting them in another Biorb or in a normal tank with an internal filter. If your putting it in an internal filter it may be a little harder but still achievable. You'd just have to transfer them quickly from the Biorb to the filter by cutting some space in the sponges you have. Depending on the size of tank you have you may need a considerable amount which could provoke some mini cycles in their tanks.

So basically what I'm asking is:

What size tank do you have?

What type of filter do you have (internal filter, external canister filter, Biorb undergravel style filter or a HOB filter (Hang on back))?

I am on day 13 of a fishless cycle with no sign of nitrites yet. Ammonia at 4ppm

Have a rio 180 with internal filter.

Are you planning on coldwater or tropical.

If tropical, I think I'm right in saying that you need to raise the temperature of the media slowly to match that in your tank.

Planning a tropical tank. Tank at moment is about 29C. Maybe not compatible then.
