Bioballs

Benificial bacteria will adhere to them, although it takes an awfull long time. They are not worth it in my opinion. If you have empty space in your filter though, these will fill it and won't harm anything.
 
Yeah they are useful, but as Puffdaddy said, it will take a while for a colony of bacteria to grow on it. The ceramic rings are better in my opinion...
 
Bioballs are great for a filter colony as they have a very high surface area:volume ratio. I doubt that bacteria will form on them any slower than ceramic media.

Bioballs are the standard media for trickle towers. They don't have wuite as much surface are:volume of ceramic media like Fluval's biomax, but the media is far less likely to get clogged, allowing periods of 2-3 years between any sort of maintenance on them.
