Yesterday I got 2 bio wheels for my marineland penquin bio wheel 350 but its making this really annoying sloshing noise and one of the wheels is making a really anoyying noise. Is this normal for new bio wheels to make this noise and if so how long till it stops because I almost can't stand it?

I think the first question anyone needs to ask here is why did you replace the biowheels? The biowheels are the location of the bulk of your benificial bacteria needed for biological filtration. By replacing the biowheel you end up reducing the ammount of ammonia and nitrite your filter will remove from the water.

But since you have already replaced it then the first thing I would check is to be sure that there is nothing hindering the biowheel from turning. Second, as it is new and quite clean the biowheel will very likely be spinning faster than the ones you just removed.

Yes, they DO make a lot of noise when they are new. Once they get heavy with all of the wonderful organisms that grow on them, they slow down and make much less noise.

Also, if you fill the tank up too much the splashing is almost as loud as when the water level is too low.

Well I never had any in the first place because before I set the tank up I floated the bio wheels in my 10g but a fish died of gill flukes and didn't want to risk cross contamination. So will this noise stop or not?

Yes it will stop making that much noise. When the biowheels get loaded with lots of good bacteria they will slow down somewhat and create almost no noise at all. I never hear mine anymore.

Depends on weather your tank is already cycled or not, and I assume with the inhabitants you have it is. It should only take a couple of weeks or maybe even less.

Yes the tank is cycled I cloned it from my long 20g, I transfered all fish from long 20g over to the 55g which were 3 long finned black widow tetras, 4 black widow tetras, and 1 common pleco, then I add about 10 pounds of gravel from the 20g to the 55g and all the plants from the 20g and the filter from the 20g.

My bio-wheels make the sloshing noise also. They have been on a cloned tank for 4 full months now and they still do it. I think it is just the nature of the beast. I've pretty much got used to it by now.

Durbkat, I use biowheels and I too had experienced the sloshing, and the only way I could reduce the sloshing was to make sure the water level wasn't too low or too hgih, even having the levels too high will increase the noise, so taking some time to find a good level will help, as for the other noises, check to see if any part of the wheel is rubbing against anything, in which case you should return to the store you bought it from and ask them for a new wheel

Also, the wheel might not be laying in the grooves, check to see if the ends of the axle are in the littel purple grooves
