I have a few Penguin bio-wheel filters on my tank and am wondering what the best procedure is when doing water changes. Should the filters be completely powered off while changing the water out? If so - how long can the beneficial bacteria survive while essentially being airborn with no water flow?

Thanks for your advice.

if the tank is doing well on water statistics then there is no reason to change more than 25% and turn them off...if you do have to change more water than the intake allows...then turn it off so that the motor doesnt burn up trying to suck water in...it can say off for a few minutes without any ill affects..just make sure it doesnt dry out...if possible just place biowheel in some water from the tank while doing the water change...hope this helps

It does indeed. Thanks for the tips.

I've been changing 5 gallons out daily on my 29 gallon during this initial cycling process. The first two days the intakes on the filters hummed along nicely during the change. Today, however - the larger filter just stopped. Once the tank was full and the filter resevoir was filled - it started humming along again. All this struck me as a bit odd since nothing had changed from the few times water was changed out previously.
