ive been cycling my tank with minnows for the last month almost. i still have ammonia. i decided to purchase bio-spira from my lfs yesterday and put half in last night, and half in about an hour ago. i know that there are many batches that do not work correctly. i kept mine refridgerator so my question is when to expect results and how i know that its not a bad batch?

Sitting back and waiting is the only real option to find out if it worked. You should expect a sudden drop in ammonia and nitrite soon after adding it. When you baught it at the shop, did they have in an a refridgerator? Did you ask about how it is shipped into the shop?

yes it was refrigerated and yes they said it was shipped refridgerated

I have not heard of any "bad batches" of BioSpira. It must be refrigerated during storage and shipment so this is usually the cause of any problems with this product. I used it and it worked exactly as promised. I introduced a few fish and BioSpira at the same time.

i had fish in there for 3 weeks then added it after there was ammonia and nitrates present... is this a problem?

Depends on how long it was left before testing. It may take a few hours for this product to show visible signs of working, and often a few days before it has its full effect.

I've heard Bio-spira doesn't work as well when added long after fish, however with a low stocking it may work. I had a complete cycle in about 1.5 weeks in my 30 gallon with bio-spira. You do need at least a few fish or some other method of adding ammonia for bio-spira to work. The bacteria need food to keep reproducing. Wait and see, let us know how it all turns out.

Good Luck!
