Bio gravel in mesh bags

I've just watched the video pimp your pump where he replaces some of the foam filter material with bio bags, he uses 4 bags is this better than using the foam pads, and when cleaning the bags would you just use aquarium water?

what are bio bags?

sponges are the best filtration media for aquariums because they trap gunk and house beneficial bacteria. They get cleaned once a month and last for years.
