Hello Everyone

I'm new here and I think this a great messageboard. Not to mention this is my first post :p

I plan to purchase a nice tank I saw at the aquarist today...woohoo! :hyper:

However, I noticed a potential problem: The tank has a hood and I want to purchase a bio filter.

The bio filter, from what I noticed, will interfere with the hood. I cannot close the hood if I install the bio filter.

Is there any way I can close the hood and still have a bio filter installed? Or would an external Fluval be a better idea? The tank is a 60 gallon.

I would appreciate any help from you guys  B)

Yes, if it's a glass top, then there's probably a plastic strip at the back that you can sculpt to fit your filter overhang (and notch for the heater cord, too!), like fish_r_great showed.

If it's the "mostly plastic" kind of hood, most that I have seen have perforations in the back that make it easy to remove sections to accomodate hang-on-back filters. I would recommend either tin snips or a utility knife to snap through the perforations.

I would not recommend the type of hoods with the perforations on the back. This limits you to the amount of things sticking out of your tank. Maybe even choosing a filter that the manufacturer of the hoods recommends, which is more likely, their own filter. I would suggest only getting either glass tops with that plastic strip OR the hoods that allow you to use that plastic strip on the back. That way you can easily cut out for filters, heaters, etc. And if you decide to change your equipment and want to close up those gaps, you can easily buy a replacement plastic strip from your LFS (Local Fish Store) or LPS (Local Fish Store).

Good point, eddie.

Not to mention that the glass tops, in my experience, are a lot easier to clean.

Thanks for the replies ^^

The tank has a plastic hood and it came with the tank, so I can't get a glass one instead =\ I'll see about cutting it though... thanks for the help :)
