I'm in the process of setting up a fuge on my 200l tank and have checked out a lot of drawings and they show bio balls at either end, or at least one end. Why is this when almost every other piece of advice is to do away with anything like this, particularly on external filters. Prior to checking into it I had planned on having the inlet to the fuge running across it and directing the flow upwards at an angle, to be determined, so as to avoid disturbing the mud. At the other end I was going to have the outlest at high level, again, to avoid disturbance as much as possible. A twofold question then, do I need the bio balls or will my system work without them as it will still have the mud and algae?

thanks for any assistance.

Cheers

Assuming you also use Live Rock, no the bioballs are not necessary :good:
