The other day my boyfriend and I went to the zoo and while there he called me over to the alligator tank. It's a huge inside tank raised off the floor. Anyways I go over and he says look theres a swordtail in there so I look and it's this huge male swordtail. He had to be at least 4 inches long not including how sword :hyper: Whatever these alligators (I think they were alligators :look: ) were I guess the swordtail is from their habitat too. I saw some other fish in the back I think they were smaller swordtails.

I would of taken a picture but I didn't have any left in my camera and it was out of batteries :/ When we go back there I'll be sure to get a picture of him. Will have to hold up something small so you can see just how big he was.

Oh yeah he was orange with some orange stripes with a blackish sword :D

Gosh, that sounds cool. Were they meant for feeders, I wonder, or just there as part of the habitat, to make the alligators feel at home? (I don't suppose they put the alligators in to mkae the swordtails feel at home?). Which zoo was this?

Yeah, maybe they are dither fish for the alligators. To be honest I can't imagine a swordtail giving an alligator a run for its money in a chase, and an alligator would have to eat thousands to fill itself up surely!

By the way, Elisabeth83 what is that beautiful fish in your avatar?

I agree--what is that gorgeous fish under your name, your avatar?

I've heard of swordtails getting swords alone that were 3 inches and up, the entire fish being 7 inches. I would SURE like to see one. :hyper: I hope you're able to show us some pictures soon. He sounds like he rules the tank when the alligators aren't around. I think he's pretty safe in there. I mean he wouldn't even be a Cheese-It to a gator would he? Even if he IS the right colour!

The fish in my avatar is a type of killífish named Pseudepiplatys annulatus :) I love killifish even though I don't own any yet :/ Someday :D

About the swordtail..I just think they had them in there as kind of a natual habitat set-up. The alligators didn't pay any attention to them. I wish I could of stayed longer and gotten pictures. We were actually the last people in the building where they keep them. We wondered why and then looked at the clock and it was 6:15 and they closed at 6:00 :*) When we walked out we saw them closing the doors. Oops :p

Next time we are there I'll make sure we have plenty of time and I can snap some pictures.

The place I am talking about is www.skansen.se I put pictures up of our day there in the non-fish photographs section. I think they have slipped to page 2 or 3 now though but if you want to take a look at some of the animals they are there :)
